The Center for Automotive Research joins the entire automotive community in mourning the loss of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne. Marchionne distinguished himself in our minds as the only CEO to open a presentation at CAR’s Management Briefing Seminars with a quote from Camus. He was an intellectual and brilliant business leader who guided Chrysler out of bankruptcy to solid profitability.
Marchionne characterized himself as a “fixer,” but he was much more than that – he was a visionary who possessed an innate understanding of the customer, the product, and the business of building automobiles. While he did not grow up in automotive, the industry became a part of his heart and soul. Marchionne worked tirelessly and expected no less from those around him, and by being one of the team, he garnered ultimate respect from everyone in this business.
