Paul D. Ryan

Paul Ryan is currently Vice President for Trade and Competitiveness at the Association of Global Automakers.  In this capacity Mr. Ryan directs international trade and U.S. investment policy initiatives for the Association and its members and serves as a senior spokesperson.  Prior to his appointment to this position, Mr. Ryan spent 15 years as Global Automakers’ Director and Senior Director of Government Affairs. In that capacity, Mr. Ryan was responsible for identifying, directing and implementing the association’s federal and state government relations initiatives.

During his more than 30 years in Washington, D.C., Mr. Ryan has managed a long list of legislative and regulatory issues involving trade, economic policy, taxes, fuel economy, vehicle safety and mobile source emissions issues.  He has extensive experience dealing with Congress, Executive branch offices and regulatory agencies, and is an expert on the public policy process.

Prior to joining Global, Mr. Ryan spent nearly 12 years with Nissan’s Government Affairs office organizing grass roots lobbying efforts, assembling and leading coalitions, and developing media relations campaigns.  Before joining Nissan, Mr. Ryan worked as a legislative analyst in the Economic Section of the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C., as a defense policy specialist at the Pentagon, and as a staffer on Capitol Hill.

Mr. Ryan received his B.A. in Political Science from Illinois State University and his M.A. in American Government and Public Policy from Loyola University of Chicago.  Mr. Ryan also studied in Japan and speaks conversational Japanese.
