Mark Wakefield is a Managing Director at AlixPartners where he leads the Automotive Practice in the Americas. He joined the firm’s Detroit office in 2006 and spent 2010-2012 building an Automotive practice in AlixPartners’ Tokyo office before returning to Detroit to lead the Americas team.  Mr. Wakefield’s primary focus is on strategy and operations improvement of automotive OEMs, suppliers and automotive finance companies.

Mr. Wakefield routinely brings deep experience and capability in helping automotive and industrial companies improve operations, acquire companies, and grow. For example, he was the lead advisor to General Motors North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing (GMNA VSSM) organization up to and through the bankruptcy, helping to restructure the dealership network, brands, products and advertising spend, and to negotiate with the US Treasury.  He has also worked extensively with private-equity investors in the areas of due diligence, preparing companies for sales, strategic reviews, and operational improvements.

Prior to AlixPartners, Mr. Wakefield led business development at HSBC Auto Finance buying loan portfolios and setting up private-label subprime ventures with automakers’ captive financing arms.  He began his consulting career at McKinsey & Company, but has been in the automotive industry for his entire professional career, starting as an Engineer, Quality Manager and Program Manager at automotive supplier Magna International.

Mr. Wakefield holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BSCE (Mechanical Engineering) degree from Queens’ University in Ontario, Canada. He is a licensed Professional Engineer by the Professional Engineers of Ontario, a Certified Insolvency & Restructuring Advisor from the Association of Insolvency & Restructuring Advisors and a former certified Internal Auditor for QS9000/TS16949.  He co-authors the annual AlixPartners Automotive Review and Outlook and is a subject matter expert on Automotive and Industrial topics within the firm and as a guest lecturer at several Universities.
