Michigan Automotive Workforce Needs Assessment
Part F Interim Report
As the automotive industry navigates transformative shifts in manufacturing, propulsion technologies, and increasing vehicle complexity, it is essential to assess how these changes are redefining workforce skill demands. CAR completed a three-part study in 2025 in collaboration with Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and the Michigan Automotive Workforce Hub to better understand the workforce needs of the evolving automotive industry in Michigan.
Michigan’s automotive production trajectory and technology transition: The CAR team provided context for Michigan’s forecasted automotive production and sales as an indicator of manufacturing volume and shifting technologies.
Automotive industry capital investment and employment growth: CAR assessed Michigan’s automotive and supplier investments and announced new jobs to highlight historical and recent auto industry investment and growth strategies.
Gathering industry perspectives on Michigan’s automotive workforce requirements: CAR engaged employers across the extended automotive supply chain to gather awareness about workforce needs, skills gaps, and critical factors impacting automotive businesses and hiring in the next few years.
CAR’s assessment was conducted as part of the broader Michigan Automotive Workforce Hub effort, with support from Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. CAR also recognizes the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research as a partner in the broader workforce research landscape. Separate reports from partner organizations provide additional context below on Michigan’s automotive workforce transition:
