Back to the Future
The time has long passed
when the principals of the major functional areas were co-located
and gathered to meet on a regular and continuous basis to coordinate
the myriad of activities necessary to design, manufacture, and sell
automobiles. Sheer growth in scale, globalization, and automotive
complexity has resulted in a breakdown of this coordination and
the building of silos of information, isolating functional areas.
In order to get “back to the future” and recapture the information
necessary for the functional areas to operate efficiently together,
PLM will play a pivotal role. This session featured senior executives
from different functional areas who presented the role of PLM from
their viewpoint and explored the issues of informational requirements
at the intersection of functional areas where the largest issues
exist. In addition, since this issue is no longer an internal issue
within an organization, the speakers presented their views on how
the industry will need to change to reap the greatest benefits of
PLM for all industry participants.
