Saginaw County is located in the central portion of the lower peninsula, adjacent to both the agricultural and industrial centers of the state. Advanced manufacturing, especially auto related, is important to the county’s economy, as are all phases of agricultural production. Michigan has ranked first in the nation for the most business investments and expansion projects five of the past seven years, while finishing second the past two years. Economic development in our state and in Saginaw County is going strong. Traditionally, Michigan has been thought of as the automotive capital of the world. While it is true that the state, as well as Saginaw County have relied on a strong advanced manufacturing sector to bolster economic activity, structural changes have taken place within the local economy to diversify the economic base. Saginaw County is Mid-Michigan’s center for health care, home to a number of highly regarded professional service firms and has a growing high-tech sector. Agriculture accounts for approximately 64% of the county’s land use. Saginaw County is a major producer of several crops on a national level. Saginaw County is ninth in the nation in cucumbers and pickles harvested, 25th in the nation in soybeans harvested and 31st in sugar beets harvested. Recently Saginaw was ranked: one of the Top 5 Best Places to Live for Cost of Living by Salary.com, the Number 2 Metro Area for Cost of Living by Forbes Magazine, and the Number 1 Up & Coming Area for Its Size by Money Magazine. Saginaw County’s diverse population is known for its skilled and dedicated workforce. Recently, the Saginaw MSA was ranked in the top 15% of all Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) in the United States in a study that focused on an educated and skilled work force according to Expansion Management magazine. Saginaw ranked above such areas as Norfolk, VA; Syracuse, NY and Colorado Springs, CO.
