Efforts to Build Mass Reduction Opportunities with Suppliers
On Tuesday, June 12, the Coalition for Automotive Lightweighting Materials (CALM) will meet with Ford Motor Company to discuss the future of mixed materials in automotive manufacturing. This is CALM’s third group meeting with an OEM since the Coalition’s recent launch in January 2012. Previous meetings with General Motors Company and Chrysler Group LLC have already yielded progress in identifying key challenges facing mixed materials in the auto industry.
CALM’s meeting with Ford Motor Company will take place at Ford’s Research and Innovation Center. Members of CALM and Ford’s materials, technology, and sustainability teams will discuss the automaker’s plans for mass reduction and advanced materials. CALM aims to facilitate better communication with OEMs and materials suppliers in these meetings, so they can collaborate to reach a collective goal.
“A primary goal of CALM and OEM collaboration is to gain information to support suppliers in overcoming the hurdles associated with the integration and implementation of new lightweight materials” said Jay Baron, CAR president and CEO.
CAR and the CALM group are working with OEMs and research organizations to both identify and rectify hurdles for implementing a mixed material, lightweight solution for tomorrow’s automobiles, which is broadly recognized as the optimum solution. Three research thrusts that have been commissioned thus far by CALM are 1) envisioning how the supply chain has to transform from steel-centric today to mixed materials over the next ten years, 2) identifying the technical constraints associated with simulation modeling of a mixed material design and 3) development of prevailing cost/benefit analysis and decision support methods for developing a mixed material design. Input to these three research areas is collected from meetings with the OEMs, the CALM members and public literature.
CALM’s research is conducted by the Center for Automotive Research. For updates on CALM and its research, see the CAR website at www.cargroup.org.
The Coalition for Automotive Lightweighting Materials - CALM is a CAR Working Group. Participation in CALM is an ongoing, annual commitment funded by participating Affiliates.
